{"id":23570,"date":"2023-10-22T17:50:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-22T17:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=23570"},"modified":"2023-10-22T17:50:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-22T17:50:07","slug":"life-saving-drugs-register-tracks-critical-patient-treatments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/10\/22\/life-saving-drugs-register-tracks-critical-patient-treatments\/","title":{"rendered":"Life Saving Drugs Register tracks critical patient treatments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NSW Health, through the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), is establishing a new digital Life Saving Drugs Register tracking vital stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new, digital register will update daily and pinpoint the exact location of these life-saving drugs to specific NSW public hospital departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The medicines on the Life Saving Drugs Register include those used to treat paracetamol overdose, snake and spider bites and poisoning from heavy metals, including 31 antidotes and 10 antivenoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly upgraded register will streamline the process for locating these medicines in time-critical emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The register replaces a web-based Excel spreadsheet updated every six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After confirming the location of the medicines, the digital register can connect to online maps showing the quickest route from the patient\u2019s location to the medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new digital register is also accessible from mobile devices to support frontline workers caring for NSW patients in diverse and challenging environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The register links to evidence-based guidelines to give health workers direction on the most appropriate use of these vital medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People suspecting an overdose, poisoning, snake or spider bite are urged to call healthdirect 1800 022 222, NSW Poisons Information Centre 131126 or 000 if there are serious safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Health Ryan Park said:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are announcing today, the creation of a one-stop-shop for life saving drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough this initiative, frontline emergency workers will be able to rapidly access critical lifesaving medicines for patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis register will inform frontline workers of the nearest location of the medicines their patients need \u2013 saving time and saving lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are modernising our health system, finding efficiencies with new and innovative initiatives \u2013 I\u2019ve always said, where we can do things better, we will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CEC Chief Executive Prof Michael Nicholl said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new register will help ensure NSW patients are better able to access life-saving drugs, either by having medications urgently transferred or patients transported to the most appropriate hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe register has moved from a web-based Excel spreadsheet updated every six months, to a dynamic webpage with daily stock updates from each hospital\u2019s pharmacy dispensing software.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>St George Hospital Emergency Specialist Dr Trevor Chan said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese highly specialised medications are designed for very unwell patients and need to be used quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe register supports health workers to find stock and ensure it is used with appropriate clinical guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NSW Health, through the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), is establishing a new digital Life Saving Drugs Register tracking vital stock.
