{"id":21924,"date":"2023-07-22T13:36:29","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T13:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=21924"},"modified":"2023-07-22T13:36:29","modified_gmt":"2023-07-22T13:36:29","slug":"leading-nsw-researchers-team-up-to-tackle-cardiovascular-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/07\/22\/leading-nsw-researchers-team-up-to-tackle-cardiovascular-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading NSW researchers team up to tackle cardiovascular disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The NSW Government is investing $8.7 million into collaborative cardiovascular research projects to drive improvements in the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for Medical Research David Harris said the 9 grants would create collaborative opportunities across a number of leading research institutes and universities so that knowledge and skills are shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese grants highlight the power of bringing the right people together to solve health problems in the hope of saving lives,\u201d Mr Harris said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith this increased funding, we are positioning NSW as a leader in cardiovascular research.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor Jean-Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Levesque, NSW Health Deputy Secretary, Clinical Innovation and Research, said cardiovascular disease currently affects more than 4 million Australians and is responsible for 1 in 4 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTragically, this equates to a rate of 118 people each day who die as a result of heart and vascular diseases,\u201d Assoc. Prof. Levesque said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInvestment in innovative and translational research in this space is vital because we want to ensure our health system is doing everything possible to prevent, detect and treat cardiovascular disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 9 funded projects involve expert multidisciplinary teams from several research institutions. Each project team also includes 2 or more early career researchers to ensure that the NSW Government is building a future pipeline of researchers in this critical field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cardiovascular Collaborative Research Grants are part of the $150 million the NSW Government has committed to cardiovascular disease research over a 10-year period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grants will cover a range of research areas, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>prevention of recurrent stroke&nbsp;<\/li><li>new treatments to repair damaged heart muscle&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>enhancement of implantable medical devices including stents&nbsp;<\/li><li>better diagnosis and prevention of immune system driven blood clots&nbsp;<\/li><li>developing new materials that will last longer than current treatments for heart valve disease<\/li><li>supporting reduction in high blood pressure across the whole population&nbsp;<\/li><li>preventing atrial fibrillation by identifying and treating its causes&nbsp;<\/li><li>exploring the impact of women\u2019s diets during pregnancy on the long-term cardiac health of their children<\/li><li>evaluating new anti-clotting therapies to reduce brain damage and other complications of acute stroke.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on the recipients and the research projects can be found here in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalresearch.nsw.gov.au\/research-directory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Health and Medical Research directorylaunch<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW Government is investing $8.7 million into collaborative cardiovascular research projects to drive improvements in the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke.
