{"id":21751,"date":"2023-07-11T14:42:06","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T14:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=21751"},"modified":"2023-07-11T14:42:06","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T14:42:06","slug":"new-rental-commissioner-to-give-renters-a-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/07\/11\/new-rental-commissioner-to-give-renters-a-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"New Rental Commissioner to give renters a voice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NSW renters will soon have a strong voice to government with the announcement today that sector leader Trina Jones will be the first NSW Rental Commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The commissioner will work with the government to design and implement changes that rebalance the rental market, making it fairer and more modern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her role as NSW Rental Commissioner, Ms Jones will be a voice for renters and work with the government and stakeholders to get moving on the reforms open for consultation now, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>making it easier for renters to have pets in their homes<\/li><li>ending \u2018no-grounds\u2019 evictions<\/li><li>implementing a portable bonds scheme that allows renters to transfer bonds from one property to another<\/li><li>improving the protection of renters\u2019 information and privacy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond these proposed changes, the rental commissioner will also be responsible for identifying and investigating other issues that are impacting the NSW rental market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commissioner will examine rental affordability and supply, encourage longer term rental agreements, investigate ways to improve energy efficiency for renters, develop educational resources for renters and owners, and monitor current tenancy laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Premier of NSW Chris Minns said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government\u2019s appointment of NSW\u2019s first rental commissioner is an important step to addressing some of the issues facing renters and importantly giving them a voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnyone who rents in NSW knows just how anxious and challenging the process can be to find suitable accommodation, not to mention the rent increases and cost of living pressures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to working with the new commissioner to make our state a fairer place for both renters and owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t fix years of problems in the rental market overnight, but we have already made a start and we are determined to do more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minister for Fair Trading and Better Regulation Anoulack Chanthivong said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRenters are almost a third of the state and they deserve secure and fair housing, Trina\u2019s job will be to advocate and drive meaningful change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe housing challenge isn\u2019t just about affordability, it\u2019s about amenity too \u2013 and we need rules that let renters get on with their lives with the rights and security they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re consulting now on changes to improve stability and fairness in the rental market, I\u2019m looking forward to working with Trina to bring this work together by the end of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incoming NSW Rental Commissioner Trina Jones said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn taking on the role of rental commissioner, my mission is to amplify the voice of renters, help strengthen their rights and improve the fairness of the rental market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to working closely and productively with government, industry, renters and owners across our state as we collaboratively search for solutions to our housing challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NSW renters will soon have a strong voice to government with the announcement today that sector leader Trina Jones will be the first NSW Rental Commissioner.
