{"id":21020,"date":"2023-04-27T22:20:34","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T22:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=21020"},"modified":"2023-04-27T22:20:34","modified_gmt":"2023-04-27T22:20:34","slug":"rent-freeze-must-be-on-fridays-national-cabinet-agenda-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/04\/27\/rent-freeze-must-be-on-fridays-national-cabinet-agenda-greens\/","title":{"rendered":"RENT FREEZE MUST BE ON FRIDAY&#8217;S NATIONAL CABINET AGENDA: GREENS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greens Leader Adam Bandt and housing spokesperson Max Chandler-Mather have called for a national rent freeze to be implemented by the National Cabinet when they meet tomorrow.<br><br>With further reports today on the worsening housing and rental crisis and Mr Bandt\u2019s rent and housing proposal announced at the National Press Club yesterday the Greens will continue their push for leadership from the Albanese government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe PM must stop delaying and seize the opportunity to put a national rent freeze on tomorrow\u2019s National Cabinet agenda and get on with implementing caps on rents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRents are skyrocketing across the country, but the Prime Minister thinks a national rent freeze is too hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYesterday the Greens released a fully-costed plan to incentivise the states to freeze rent increases for two years to give wages a chance to catch up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA rent freeze is not just legally possible, it\u2019s also politically possible. With the Greens\u2019 support the government could pass a serious plan for renters through the parliament by July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne third of the country is renting. If the government doesn\u2019t show up to National Cabinet tomorrow with a real plan for renters, they\u2019re throwing renters across the country to the wolves of the private market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens Housing spokesperson and member for Griffith Max Chandler-Mather MP<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the central demands in today\u2019s Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot is national tenancy standards including national action on rent increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery day Labor refuses to coordinate a national freeze on rent increases via National Cabinet is another day a family will face eviction because they can\u2019t afford the rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith multiple investment properties maybe it\u2019s hard for the Prime Minister to understand just how urgent this rental crisis is, but I encourage him to go to talk to renters and ask them what they think of freezing rent increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Prime Minister might call rent controls \u201cpixie dust\u201d, but for renters, a freeze on rent increases means staying in their home and not being evicted into homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccording to Anglicare, less than 1% of private rentals are affordable for someone on the minimum wage.
