{"id":20455,"date":"2023-03-03T01:23:59","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T01:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=20455"},"modified":"2023-03-03T01:23:59","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T01:23:59","slug":"greens-urge-labor-to-stare-down-live-export-industry-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/03\/03\/greens-urge-labor-to-stare-down-live-export-industry-pressure\/","title":{"rendered":"GREENS URGE LABOR TO STARE DOWN LIVE EXPORT INDUSTRY PRESSURE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Animal Welfare, has criticised&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.greens.org.au\/t\/y-l-plyhrkl-ikjrmhjg-y\/\">efforts<\/a>&nbsp;by the live sheep export industry to pressure Labor into backflipping on their election promise to ban live sheep exports, as reported today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senator Faruqi said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor went to the last two federal elections with a policy to end live sheep export, a measure that polling repeatedly shows is supported by a clear majority of people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Government must stare down this brazen attempt by a cruel and brutal industry to bully it into backflipping on that promise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe industry\u2019s claims that it has reformed and can now be trusted is rubbish. Sheep continue to die in large numbers on live export ships and suffer oppressive heat stress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know even the most basic transparency measures, such as independent observers, are not being followed, making a mockery of any of their animal welfare claims. The Government is being taken for a ride by this cruel industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe industry is right on one thing though: Animal welfare campaigners won\u2019t stop at just the live sheep industry. Live animal export should be shut down entirely, as New Zealand is doing.
