{"id":20311,"date":"2023-02-23T11:27:40","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T11:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=20311"},"modified":"2023-02-23T11:27:40","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T11:27:40","slug":"investing-in-a-stronger-healthy-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2023\/02\/23\/investing-in-a-stronger-healthy-region\/","title":{"rendered":"Investing in a stronger, healthy region"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Australia will invest in high-quality health programs across the Pacific and Southeast Asia as part of the Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative, a new five-year program to improve health outcomes and promote regional prosperity and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic\u2019s impact on health services in our region has been severe. Vaccination coverage for diseases such as measles and diphtheria has declined and the burden on health systems posed by non-communicable diseases like heart disease is increasing. More progress is needed on preventing, diagnosing and treating HIV\/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to this shared challenge, the Australian Government is inviting proposals that support the needs of our region \u2013 in particular, to tackle infectious disease outbreaks, address non-communicable diseases and improve mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the Government will fund the research and development of vaccines, drugs and diagnostics for diseases that affect the Pacific and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will also expand regional health assistance provided by key Australian Government agencies and extend partnerships with international and regional agencies supporting health systems in our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing investments in sexual and reproductive health and rights will also be continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative seeks to support gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment, disability inclusion, and address the health impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information is available at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indopacifichealthsecurity.dfat.gov.au\/\">Indo-Pacific Health Security<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cImproving the health and wellbeing of communities across the Pacific and Southeast Asia is critical to ensuring our region\u2019s security, prosperity and stability.<\/p><p>\u201cCOVID-19 has reversed health and development gains in our region, and Australia is working with partners to restore their health systems and build on investments made during the acute phase of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for International Development and the Pacific, the Hon Pat Conroy MP said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThis new initiative demonstrates the Australian Government is serious about investing in health in our region, the Indo-Pacific, to support more resilient communities, improve health outcomes and save lives.<\/p><p>\u201cThis initiative will complement Australia\u2019s ongoing health assistance in the region, through support to partner governments, multilateral organisations, and non-government organisations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia will invest in high-quality health programs across the Pacific and Southeast Asia as part of the Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative, a new five-year program to improve health outcomes and promote regional prosperity and stability.
