{"id":19705,"date":"2022-12-29T08:37:30","date_gmt":"2022-12-29T08:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=19705"},"modified":"2022-12-29T08:37:30","modified_gmt":"2022-12-29T08:37:30","slug":"first-nations-deaths-taking-toll-on-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/12\/29\/first-nations-deaths-taking-toll-on-community\/","title":{"rendered":"FIRST NATIONS DEATHS TAKING TOLL ON COMMUNITY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A First Nations man collapsed and died at Greenough Regional Prison on Tuesday afternoon, the second death of an Aboriginal person in custodial care in less than a week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This death follows that of a First Nations woman at Wandoo Rehabilitation Prison who had a \u201cmedical event\u201d on December 21 and was on life support until Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the year leading up to the end of September, 106 people died in custody and 27 per cent were First Nations people.<br><br><strong>WA Greens Senator and Yamatji-Noongar woman, Dorinda Cox said:<\/strong><br><br><em>\u201cFirst Nations communities across WA are in distress over yet another death in custody.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe final months of 2022 have brought so much grief and sorrow to families who\u2019ve lost loved ones so tragically.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFollowing the violent attacks on Cassius Turvey and Diane Miller, our community is now dealing with two deaths in custody over Christmas &#8211; when loved ones should be enjoying time with their families.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe cannot continue to accept First Nations deaths in custody as unavoidable.
