{"id":17927,"date":"2022-08-26T01:11:06","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T01:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=17927"},"modified":"2022-08-26T01:11:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T01:11:06","slug":"public-confidence-in-australias-environment-laws-undermined-by-tasmanian-and-federal-bureaucrats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/08\/26\/public-confidence-in-australias-environment-laws-undermined-by-tasmanian-and-federal-bureaucrats\/","title":{"rendered":"Public confidence in Australia\u2019s environment laws undermined by Tasmanian and federal bureaucrats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public confidence in Australia\u2019s environment laws has been undermined by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.greens.org.au\/t\/y-l-nfljtl-ikididduyh-y\/\">disturbing reports<\/a>&nbsp;of Tasmanian and federal bureaucrats politicising science surrounding the tragic decline of the swift parrot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Greens Senator for lutruwita\/Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReports that Tasmanian and federal bureaucrats appear to have taken actions to politicise the science surrounding the sad decline of swift parrots are a shocking betrayal of public trust in our governments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it is true that Tasmanian bureaucrats tried to influence a report at the request of the logging industry or a captured state government, it&#8217;s just another example of why you can&#8217;t trust the states to manage national matters of environmental significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTanya Plibersek\u2019s critical and timely review of our failed federal environment laws must lead to reforms that prevent short term vested interests from putting more species at risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDownplaying threats to the swift parrot\u2019s recovery plan because they are politically inconvenient is not only immoral but totally undermines the public\u2019s confidence in laws designed to stop species being pushed to the brink of extinction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s little wonder people are taking matters into their own hands and resorting to protests and direct action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI urge the Albanese Government to support an end to native forest logging in Tasmania \u2013 like we\u2019ve seen in WA and Victoria.
