{"id":1761,"date":"2019-03-07T03:38:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T03:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=1761"},"modified":"2019-03-07T03:38:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T03:38:48","slug":"city-launches-sailing-regatta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/03\/07\/city-launches-sailing-regatta\/","title":{"rendered":"City launches Sailing regatta"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">City of Newcastle has welcomed the return of the spectacular Sailfest Newcastle Regatta.<br \/>\nThe event will feature skiffs, catamarans and two hallowed pieces of silverware in Newcastle\u2019s sporting pantheon \u2013 the 110-year-old Cock of The Harbour Trophy for the fastest boat on the harbour and the Newcastle Harbour Regatta trophy first contested in 1834.<br \/>\nThe event will take place from Friday 29 March to Sunday 31 March, including a \u201cTry Sailing\u201d experience on Throsby Creek for kids and their guardians.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"SailingRegattainside2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-launches-Sailing-regatta\/SailingRegattainside2.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"SailingRegattainside2.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nIn connection with the Newcastle Sailing Yacht Club, the City is contributing $20,000 to the Transpac 52 (TP52) class of competition, an ocean-class vessel.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m proud to announce our sponsorship towards this year\u2019s Sailfest Newcastle Regatta as part of our commitment to develop local events as well as attracting high-quality sporting events,\u201d the Lord Mayor said at today\u2019s launch.<br \/>\n\u201cThe event will draw sailors from right up and down the east coast, providing a welcome boost for the local economy and adding another great fixture to our growing calendar of annual events.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Sailfest Regatta is a great way to help us realise our vision to create a vibrant and active city and we look forward to growing our relationship with organisers to really activate the harbour and its surrounds.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"SailingRegattainside3.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-launches-Sailing-regatta\/SailingRegattainside3.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"SailingRegattainside3.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe event will also help a push by the City and the local sailing community to stage a stopover of the global Ocean Race sailing event in 2021.<br \/>\nThe Ocean Race \u2013 formerly known as the Volvo Ocean Race &#8211; is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world and one of the sport\u2019s Big Three events, alongside the Olympic Games and America\u2019s Cup.<br \/>\nThe 2021 event will begin in Alicante, Spain, and hopefully feature Newcastle as a port of call in its yet-to-be-confirmed route.<br \/>\nThe Newcastle Regatta will be on from 29-31 March.
