{"id":16150,"date":"2022-04-15T01:36:08","date_gmt":"2022-04-15T01:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=16150"},"modified":"2022-04-15T01:36:08","modified_gmt":"2022-04-15T01:36:08","slug":"forestry-sector-needs-reform-not-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/04\/15\/forestry-sector-needs-reform-not-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Forestry sector needs reform, not expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Greens have called for an end to native forest logging in addition to plantation forestry reform following the Morrison Government\u2019s announcement today about increasing its self-reliance on wood supply.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens Senator for lutruwita\/Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no surprise that the Liberal Party is announcing another taxpayer-subsidised lifeline to support the loss-making forestry industry in Tasmania prior to an election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver recent decades the logging industry has received billions in taxpayer subsidies to keep it afloat; this is just another chapter in that sad saga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThe Government refuses to rule out using unsustainable native forest products in its new \u2018innovation hub\u2019 \u2013 and on that basis alone the Greens are likely to use any future balance of power situation in parliament to block this funding package.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith states across Australia ending native logging, it\u2019s clear that the Tasmanian forestry industry won\u2019t be able to continue in its current form forever. It\u2019s destroying Australia\u2019s incredible natural heritage, and consumers are waking up to the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe plantation forestry sector must not be recklessly expanded to create more job opportunities in research and manufacturing &#8211; the current system is broken, and we need to be smarter about what we\u2019ve got.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany of Tasmania\u2019s plantation forests are grown at the taxpayers\u2019 expense, only to be shipped out for processing in Asia. Just holding back a handful of these shiploads would meet Australian building needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greens spokesperson for forests, Senator Janet Rice said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLogging Australia\u2019s native forests is environmental vandalism and economically unviable. The Greens will end the destructive native forest logging that is destroying wildlife habitation, water catchments, carbon stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNinety percent of the timber industry is already plantation based.
