{"id":16146,"date":"2022-04-14T05:27:02","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T05:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=16146"},"modified":"2022-04-14T05:27:02","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T05:27:02","slug":"union-blitz-on-penalty-rates-this-easter-long-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/04\/14\/union-blitz-on-penalty-rates-this-easter-long-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Union blitz on penalty rates this Easter long weekend\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Unions will be out in force checking caf\u00e9 owners are paying the correct public holiday penalty rate of double time and a quarter to young workers this Easter long weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young people working in cafes, supermarkets and restaurants are especially vulnerable to being ripped off with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net\/victorianunions\/pages\/1411\/attachments\/original\/1493954358\/Young_Workers_Snapshot_The_Great_Wage_Ripoff_final.pdf?1493954358\">recent study<\/a>&nbsp;finding one in two aren\u2019t receiving their legal entitlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All four days of the Easter long weekend are public holidays including Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unions NSW Assistant Secretary, Thomas Costa, says casual employees were particularly vulnerable to being ripped off during public holiday periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In key industries such as retail and hospitality, special loading rates of double time and a quarter and sometimes double time and a half apply for working Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not getting paid over double what you are for a normal shift then you know there\u2019s something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really important employees are aware of this, and if they&#8217;re in any doubt or think they&#8217;re being ripped off, they should contact their union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnion officials will be out in force across NSW this Easter long weekend making sure businesses are paying their staff their full penalty rate entitlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost employers are excellent so it\u2019s really important they don\u2019t have to compete with people who are ripping off their staff, that\u2019s completely unfair,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Costa also reminded employees that it was voluntary to work on public holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;No worker should feel coerced into working Good Friday or Easter Sunday &#8211; you have every right to decline a shift,&#8221; Mr Costa says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Easter long weekend is a good time to relax with family and friends and that&#8217;s what we encourage working people to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs it is Aussies do more unpaid overtime than anywhere in the world, so they truly deserve a bonus when they also work on their holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralia Institute data shows on average Australian workers do 6.1 hours of unpaid overtime a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s like giving $230 to your boss each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For the broader community, it&#8217;s worth sparing a thought for the workers who keep our restaurants, stores, hospitals and police stations staffed while the rest of us are relaxing over the long weekend,\u201d says Unions NSW Assistant Secretary Thomas Costa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unions will be out in force checking caf\u00e9 owners are paying the correct public holiday penalty rate of double time and a quarter to young workers this Easter long weekend.
