{"id":15581,"date":"2022-03-20T04:44:55","date_gmt":"2022-03-20T04:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=15581"},"modified":"2022-03-20T04:44:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-20T04:44:55","slug":"strike-looms-in-catholic-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/03\/20\/strike-looms-in-catholic-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Strike looms in Catholic schools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Members and delegates at the Independent Education Union of Australia NSW\/ACT Branch Council have voted unanimously for teachers and support staff who work in Catholic systemic schools to move towards taking protected industrial action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union has almost 20,000 members in 600 Catholic schools throughout NSW and the ACT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the IEU Council meeting, members and delegates endorsed five key demands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Pay teachers what they\u2019re worth (in line with other professions)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Give support staff a fair deal (pay parity with their counterparts in government schools)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Let teachers teach \u2013 cut paperwork<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Allow time for proper planning (reduce face-to-face teaching load by two hours a week)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 End staff shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe failure to increase teachers\u2019 pay to match that of other professionals and the ever-increasing workload has led to a crisis in teaching,\u201d the Council resolution states. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Catholic employers and the NSW Government to hear our voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IEUA NSW\/ACT Branch Acting Secretary Carol Matthews said: \u201cOur members are frustrated at the slow pace of negotiations given no offer has been received from the employers. The union sent the claim to the employers in November last year well before agreements expired at the end of 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The severe shortage of teachers in Catholic schools across NSW and the ACT is a direct result of declining pay coupled with excessive workloads. It has been turbo-charged by the COVID-19 pandemic with staff either off sick or isolating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeachers are exhausted because of extra demands to cover absent colleagues\u2019 classes,\u201d Matthews said. \u201cMembers have reported standing in a corridor between classrooms trying to teach two or three primary classes simultaneously. Something has to be done before even more school staff burn out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union members agree with the NSW Teachers Federation that uncompetitive salaries and unsustainable workloads are driving teachers (both new and experienced) away from the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeachers\u2019 workloads are only increasing but teachers are not getting paid what they should be for the hours they work,\u201d said IEUA NSW\/ACT Branch President Christine Wilkinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYoung graduates are not going into the teaching profession because of the pay and workload. When I talk to my Year 12 students, not many of them want to go into teaching \u2013 it\u2019s just not an attractive career for most young people today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union will be discussing the proposal for protected action with members in schools throughout NSW and the ACT and any further decisions about industrial action will be taken in coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members and delegates at the Independent Education Union of Australia NSW\/ACT Branch Council have voted unanimously for teachers and support staff who work in Catholic systemic schools to move towards taking protected industrial action.
