{"id":15201,"date":"2022-03-01T19:44:47","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T19:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=15201"},"modified":"2022-03-01T19:44:47","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T19:44:47","slug":"premiers-reading-challenge-now-open-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/03\/01\/premiers-reading-challenge-now-open-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier&#8217;s reading challenge now open"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Premier\u2019s Reading Challenge marks its 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary starting today, with children encouraged to join the party &#8211; by reading lots of books!<br>\u00a0<br>The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature.<br>\u00a0<br>First started in 2002, the Challenge has grown in both student participation and completion numbers every year since its inception.<br>\u00a0<br>Premier Dominic Perrottet said despite disruptions from COVID-19 in 2021, participation in the Challenge was up almost 3 per cent (440,000 students) with individual books read reaching almost 9 million.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see that the Challenge continues to grow, encouraging generations to enjoy reading,\u201d Mr Perrottet said.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cThe challenge encourages students to extend reading beyond the classroom where they can read for pleasure and knowledge.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said this year\u2019s motto \u201cstories that stay with you\u201d was very suitable following the years we have had.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cReading is so beneficial for students\u2019 lives, it sharpens their\u00a0knowledge and strengthens writing and vocabulary \u2013 but just as importantly it makes for happier, more creative kids who take that with them into adulthood,\u201d Ms Mitchell said.<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cReading is a gift that unlocks future success for students. I\u2019m excited for this year\u2019s challenge to start.\u201d<br>\u00a0<br>The Premier\u2019s Reading Challenge begins on Monday, 28 February and is open for student entries until Friday, 19 August.
