{"id":14629,"date":"2022-01-28T04:54:45","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T04:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=14629"},"modified":"2022-01-28T04:54:45","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T04:54:45","slug":"a-band-aid-on-a-broken-leg-reef-cash-useless-without-deep-emissions-cuts-this-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2022\/01\/28\/a-band-aid-on-a-broken-leg-reef-cash-useless-without-deep-emissions-cuts-this-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"A Band-Aid on a broken leg: Reef cash useless without deep emissions cuts this decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" width=\"100%\">\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WITH AN ELECTION and UNESCO\u2019s ruling on the Great Barrier Reef looming, the Federal Government has announced $1 billion for the Reef, which the Climate Council has labelled as more \u201cgolden Band-Aid\u201d spending.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minister Scott Morrison is set to announce $1 billion will go towards improving water quality, reef management and research for the Great Barrier Reef today in Cairns.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/dec\/19\/great-barrier-reef-could-face-another-mass-bleaching-by-end-of-january-forecast-says#:~:text=1%20month%20old-,Great%20Barrier%20Reef%20could%20face%20another%20mass,end%20of%20January%2C%20forecast%20says&amp;text=Corals%20across%20large%20parts%20of,a%20United%20States%20government%20agency.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the Reef is dangerously close to experiencing another mass bleach event, which would be an unprecedented and catastrophic fourth in six years.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Climate Councillor, ecologist and Distinguished Professor of Biology at Macquarie University, Professor Lesley Hughes said:<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnless you are cutting emissions deeply this decade the situation on the Reef will only get worse. This is essentially like using a bunch of Band-Aids to try and mend a broken leg.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny additional funding for the environment in Australia is welcome, as it is severely under-resourced. However, handing out cash for the Great Barrier Reef with one hand, while funding the very industry &#8211; fossil fuels &#8211; that\u2019s driving devastating climate impacts like marine heatwaves and coral bleaching, means they are adding to the very problem they are claiming they want to fix.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnly<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/resources\/kurri-kurri-gas-station-polluting-present\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a month ago<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we saw the greenlight given to the Morrison Government\u2019s polluting, unnecessary, taxpayer funded pet project &#8211; the Kurri Kurri gas power station.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have been working as an ecologist and watching the Great Barrier Reef decline for 30 years now. How many more times do we need to say it? Climate change is the number one threat to the Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs globally. The only way to protect the Reef from this threat is to move rapidly away from fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists recognise that climate change is the greatest threat to the Reef. The Federal Government&#8217;s woefully inadequate 2030 target of 26-28% reduction in emissions, if adopted globally, would lead to up to 4\u00b0C warming, which scientists warn no coral reefs can survive.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Morrison Government wants to convince UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage Committee that the Reef is not \u201cIn Danger&#8221;, even though it clearly is.
