{"id":13990,"date":"2021-11-24T08:08:32","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T08:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=13990"},"modified":"2021-11-24T08:08:32","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T08:08:32","slug":"domestic-violence-commissioner-and-500-more-sector-workers-under-labor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/11\/24\/domestic-violence-commissioner-and-500-more-sector-workers-under-labor\/","title":{"rendered":"Domestic Violence Commissioner and 500 more sector workers under Labor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"css-18a3b8x\">\n<div class=\"css-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1f8xsu6\">\n<div class=\"css-1fsp72n\">\n<div class=\"css-19y7hd1\">\n<div class=\"css-edqgxj\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"css-10l88gv\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Right now, women fleeing violence are being turned away from accommodation and services because of insufficient funding towards sector workers, and the failure to recognise this tragedy as a national priority.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-mmst5v\">\n<div class=\"html-text-field css-1ksj3k0\">\nA Labor Government will appoint a Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Commissioner and fund 500 new community sector workers to support women in crisis.<br \/>\nAcross the country domestic violence organisation tell us how much more they could do with an extra pair of hands.<br \/>\nLabor\u2019s commitment to fund 500 new community sector workers will allow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Services to employ an extra case worker to help women go through the complex task of setting up a new, safer life.<\/li>\n<li>Community organisations to hire a financial counsellor to help women escape the debt their abuser has run up in their name,<\/li>\n<li>Specialist women\u2019s services to gain a support worker to sit with children and help them work through their experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Half of these 500 new community sector workers will be located in rural and regional communities.<br \/>\nThis is part of Labor\u2019s ongoing commitment to tackling the scourge of domestic violence. It builds on our promise to invest $100 million in crisis accommodation and build 4,000 homes for women and children fleeing violence and older women on low incomes who are at risk of homelessness.<br \/>\nOver the past 8 years, Coalition governments have failed to take this task seriously.<br \/>\nNot enough workers are funded.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s past time to stop just talking about it \u2013 and elevate women\u2019s safety to a national priority.<br \/>\nThis is why, an Albanese government will establish a new Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Commissioner. The Commissioner will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Act as an advocate for victim-survivors.<\/li>\n<li>Work with States and territory organisation to ensure we have the data we need to invest resources where they will make the most difference.<\/li>\n<li>Help co-ordinate key national frameworks so safety and access to services doesn\u2019t depend on where you live.<\/li>\n<li>Provide accountability and transparency by measuring progress against the National Plan and delivering a yearly report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We know this is just the beginning.
