{"id":1367,"date":"2019-01-26T01:22:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-26T01:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=1367"},"modified":"2019-01-26T01:22:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-26T01:22:00","slug":"city-set-to-welcome-194-new-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2019\/01\/26\/city-set-to-welcome-194-new-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"City set to welcome 194 new citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">\nNine years ago Sierra Leone man John Sandy was living in a Guinea refugee camp with 6,000 other men from war-torn countries like his own &#8211; seemingly with no future to look forward to.<br \/>\nHe was separated from his wife, torn from his family and living in third-world squalor yearning for a better life.<br \/>\nThat came in 2011 when he fled to Australia and was re-united in Newcastle with wife Isata after 12 years apart.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Inside.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getattachment\/Council\/News\/Latest-News\/City-ready-to-welcome-194-new-citizens\/Inside.jpg.aspx\" alt=\"Inside.jpg\" \/><sub><strong>John Sandy and his wife Isata reunited in Newcastle after 12 years apart<\/strong><\/sub><br \/>\nFast forward eight years to this Saturday, and\u00a0Mr Sandy will rejoice when he and 193 other men and women from more than 46 different countries are officially welcomed by Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes as new Australians.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I heard the news I was becoming an Australian Citizen, I was just so grateful and proud,\u201d Mr Sandy said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt gives hope that people like me who have fled another country in fear of their life can find a new place elsewhere.\u201d<br \/>\nTomorrow\u2019s 9am citizenship ceremony at City Hall will mark 70 years since the Australian Government first introduced Citizenship into Commonwealth law.<br \/>\n\u201cIn 1949, just seven men made history when they were sworn in as the nation\u2019s first official Australians recognised under Commonwealth law,\u201d Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cTomorrow, in Newcastle alone, that number will be 194 from 46 different birthplaces.
