{"id":13431,"date":"2021-10-19T04:11:04","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T04:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=13431"},"modified":"2021-10-19T04:11:04","modified_gmt":"2021-10-19T04:11:04","slug":"landmark-investment-to-help-more-women-and-children-fleeing-domestic-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/10\/19\/landmark-investment-to-help-more-women-and-children-fleeing-domestic-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Landmark investment to help more women and children fleeing domestic violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands more women and children escaping domestic abuse will be supported with housing and specialist services following a landmark investment by the NSW Government.<br \/>\nPremier Dominic Perrottet said the Government would invest an additional $484.3 million \u2013 the single biggest investment in tackling domestic and family violence (DFV) in the State\u2019s history.<br \/>\n\u201cEveryone has the right to live a life free from violence and abuse, a right that is far too often callously eroded by those who perpetrate domestic violence,\u201d Mr Perrottet said.<br \/>\n\u201cToday\u2019s commitment will help to reduce the often devastating impacts of domestic abuse by providing timely access to safe, affordable and appropriate supports and housing assistance so that women and children who bravely escape violence can begin to recover and thrive.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>The funding package includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>$426.6 million<\/strong>\u00a0over four years to expand\u00a0<em>Core and Cluster<\/em>\u00a0to deliver and operate around 75 extra women\u2019s refuges that support women and children escaping DFV. Under the\u00a0<em>Core and Cluster<\/em>\u00a0model, self-contained accommodation is located next to a \u2018core\u2019, which provides access to services including counselling, legal assistance, education, and employment support. The sites contain meeting rooms, audio-visual equipment for court appearances, communal kitchens, and playgrounds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>$52.5 million\u00a0<\/strong>over four years towards the Community Housing Innovation Fund (CHIF) partnership with the community housing sector, to provide approximately 200 sustainable, social and affordable housing dwellings for women experiencing DFV.<\/li>\n<li><strong>$5.2 million\u00a0<\/strong>over four years, for a trial in two districts to provide dedicated supports for accompanied children and young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, with a focus on children and young people impacted by DFV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NSW Police respond to more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.police.nsw.gov.au%2Fnews%2Fnews%3Fsq_content_src%3D%252BdXJsPWh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGZWJpenByZC5wb2xpY2UubnN3Lmdvdi5hdSUyRm1lZGlhJTJGOTc4MzcuaHRtbCZhbGw9MQ%253D%253D&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwebmaster%40nsw.liberal.org.au%7C4b6d061e9c254d498a8208d9928a7b7d%7Cf7b9e888f8a7467190c0d6ca09a51633%7C0%7C0%7C637701945890907393%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=PH%2FO1w4CfVg02HsemWku1uTDeOKYzcvYPWHrMmSZ1XM%3D&amp;reserved=0\">140,000 DFV incidents annually<\/a>\u00a0and, tragically,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aihw.gov.au%2Freports-data%2Fbehaviours-risk-factors%2Fdomestic-violence%2Foverview&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwebmaster%40nsw.liberal.org.au%7C4b6d061e9c254d498a8208d9928a7b7d%7Cf7b9e888f8a7467190c0d6ca09a51633%7C0%7C0%7C637701945890907393%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=5i4CJpPPDRMm53ffWwltWRi%2BZFfOT4R33Ej6abSS9ag%3D&amp;reserved=0\">on average, one woman is killed every nine days<\/a>\u00a0in Australia by a current or former partner.<br \/>\nMinister for Women Bronnie Taylor said DFV is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aihw.gov.au%2Freports%2Faustralias-welfare%2Fhomelessness-and-homelessness-services&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwebmaster%40nsw.liberal.org.au%7C4b6d061e9c254d498a8208d9928a7b7d%7Cf7b9e888f8a7467190c0d6ca09a51633%7C0%7C0%7C637701945890917351%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=fjDZXH7tFwM41sD51yDFmaevBqGBhFSmBkKOMZ7HQKc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">leading cause of homelessness<\/a>\u00a0for women and children, illustrating the high demand for these critical services.<br \/>\n\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aihw.gov.au%2Freports%2Fhomelessness-services%2Fspecialist-homelessness-services-annual-report%2Fdata&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwebmaster%40nsw.liberal.org.au%7C4b6d061e9c254d498a8208d9928a7b7d%7Cf7b9e888f8a7467190c0d6ca09a51633%7C0%7C0%7C637701945890917351%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=DN8XHxkd1NVNt2l43nmWyMPUF1OxbBUMy9BLJBEXVK0%3D&amp;reserved=0\">In 2019-20, almost 40 per cent<\/a>\u00a0of the people who accessed specialist homelessness services in NSW, across our cities, regional and rural communities, had experienced domestic abuse,\u201d Mrs Taylor said.<br \/>\n\u201cOne of the most important things we can do in government is to ensure that when a victim-survivor makes the courageous decision to leave a violent home \u2013 a time when she actually faces the greatest risk \u2013 that there\u2019s a secure, supportive environment waiting to help her.\u201d<br \/>\nTreasurer Matt Kean said today\u2019s investment demonstrates the Government\u2019s commitment to support everyone across our diverse communities, especially the most vulnerable.<br \/>\n\u201cThis historic investment will support women and children impacted by domestic violence for generations to come by almost doubling the number of women\u2019s refuges across the state \u2013 it will not only change lives, it will save lives \u2013 and there\u2019s no greater legacy than that,\u201d Mr Kean said.<br \/>\nAttorney General and Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence Mark Speakman said children are often referred to as the \u2018silent victims\u2019 of DFV, a term that in reality has acted as a loud, rallying call for the Government\u2019s investment in more housing and more specialist supports for young people.<br \/>\n\u201cIn 2019-20, specialist homelessness services supported more than 8,200 children in families experiencing domestic violence. Specialist domestic and family violence services are a lifeline for women and children fleeing abuse, and do the work of many agencies combined. We know the numbers of people in need being turned away are continuously increasing due to lack of space. I have officially escaped domestic violence for good, and can now see the warning signs to be able to stop it instead of putting up with it.
