A first-time entrant\u00a0has taken out the People’s Choice award in this year’s Kilgour Prize after\u00a0<\/span>attracting<\/span>\u00a019 per cent<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>total\u00a0<\/span>votes<\/span>, which were<\/span>\u00a0cast online due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/span>
\nTinonee artist Nathan\u00a0Paddison\u00a0picked up the $5000 prize\u00a0for his colourful self-portrait\u00a0<\/span>Flour Sail<\/span><\/em><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>which reflects on\u00a0<\/span>one of t<\/span>he tougher periods in his life<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\n\"ArtistThe People’s Choice award is usually decided\u00a0by votes cast by members of the public when they visit the annual Kilgour Prize exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery.<\/span><\/span>
\nHowever, with the gallery closed due to the COVID\u00a0lockdown, the exhibition was forced to go\u00a0completely\u00a0digital for the first time in its\u00a016-year history, with\u00a0an online\u00a0voting\u00a0system\u00a0used to determine the most popular entry from among the 30 finalists.<\/span><\/span>
\nDespite the challenges, it was a milestone year\u00a0for the Kilgour Prize, which attracted\u00a0476\u00a0entries\u00a0from across\u00a0every state\u00a0and territory in Australia, an increase of more than\u00a0<\/span>100 entries from 2020 and the highest number overall since it was established in 2006.<\/span><\/span>
\nAlmost 2900 works\u00a0overall\u00a0have been entered into\u00a0what has become one of Australia’s major art competitions,\u00a0which\u00a0presents some of the\u00a0finest\u00a0examples of contemporary Australian portrait and figurative painting.<\/span><\/span>
\nThe Kilgour Prize\u00a0is administered by Newcastle Art Gallery and funded\u00a0<\/span>by a bequest from artist Jack Noel Kilgour<\/span>, providing\u00a0<\/span>$50,000\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>o the winner<\/span>\u00a0each year<\/span>\u00a0and a<\/span>n additional $5,000\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>painting voted most popular by the general public.<\/span><\/span>
\nAccording to\u00a0Nathan’s\u00a0artist statement,\u00a0<\/span>Flour Sail<\/span><\/em><\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>“self<\/span>\u00a0portrait of harder times, the flowers representing anything I could find to make a quick buck even a droopy flower<\/span>“<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\n\"Nathan“Everyone has hard times in life and is always searching for who they are and where they belong in the world. Spelling the words wrong is a way to make the viewer take a second look and to understand better rather than just to read words. Figuring out meanings brings a new understanding that would otherwise be left to be forgotten.”<\/span><\/span>
\nThe People’s Choice award\u00a0is\u00a0the first prize\u00a0won by\u00a0the\u00a0Mid North Coast\u00a0artist, who only started painting four years ago.<\/span><\/span>
\nNathan\u00a0said\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0unbelievable to\u00a0win this award in such a prestigious prize and against such\u00a0talented\u00a0finalists, noting it was\u00a0the “greatest validation” for the\u00a0“endless hours days,\u00a0weeks and years” he\u00a0put into\u00a0his art.<\/span><\/span>

\nJack Noel Kilgour (1900\u20131987) was an Australian artist well-known for his academic approach to landscape and portrait painting. In 1987 Kilgour bequeathed funds for the creation of a major figurative and portrait art competition to be run in perpetuity.
