{"id":13287,"date":"2021-10-08T12:39:14","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T12:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=13287"},"modified":"2021-10-08T12:39:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T12:39:14","slug":"hamiltons-james-street-plaza-lights-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/10\/08\/hamiltons-james-street-plaza-lights-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamilton\u2019s James Street Plaza lights up"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"content-main \">\n<div class=\"bg-container\">\n<div id=\"content-main\" class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"second-lvl-wrap\">\n<div class=\"main-content\">\n<div class=\"inner-content event-detail-page\">\n<div class=\"inner-desc\">\nHamilton&#8217;s James Street Plaza will be filled with colour and light every night following the installation of an interactive lighting display developed as part of City of Newcastle&#8217;s transformation of this much-loved community space.<br \/>\nConstruction of the upgrade is now complete with new seating and artworks installed, and new paving, landscaping and tree planting transforming the space.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the launch of the evening lighting display was the final step in upgrading the plaza.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s wonderful to see the way that the lighting display transforms the space at night, bringing colour and activity to this space for locals and visitors to enjoy,&#8221; Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\nIn June the community was asked to vote on their favourite of three lighting designs put forward by the University of Newcastle\u2019s Future Art Science &amp; Technology Lab (FASTLab), each celebrating a different aspect of Hamilton&#8217;s history and character.<br \/>\nThe &#8220;Microcosmic Mosaic&#8221; concept proved to be the favourite and was developed into a ten-minute animation which will play on a loop to light up the space for four hours each evening, celebrating Hamilton&#8217;s unique character and history.<br \/>\nCouncillor Carol Duncan said that the lighting display will attract visitors and activate the space at night, improving safety in the area.<br \/>\n&#8220;The community told us they wanted a safer, more appealing place for people to spend time during both the day and the night,\u201d Cr Duncan said.<br \/>\n&#8220;Once COVID-19 restrictions lift, we look forward to seeing the community come together and activate the space with music, markets and food.&#8221;<br \/>\nIn addition to the lighting display, the rich history of Hamilton is reflected in artworks in the renewed plaza, informed by the research of local historian Ruth Cotton, author of\u00a0<em>Hidden Hamilton\u00a0<\/em>and through collaboration with the Newcastle Museum.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/getmedia\/f3eee054-1fff-4c94-8582-aa5357dc8a32\/JamesStreetPlaza-12_hero.jpg?width=800&amp;height=372\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"footer-acknowledges bg-black text-white text-center\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hamilton&#8217;s James Street Plaza will be filled with colour and light every night following the installation of an interactive lighting display developed as part of City of Newcastle&#8217;s transformation of this much-loved community space.
