{"id":13277,"date":"2021-10-07T06:51:28","date_gmt":"2021-10-07T06:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=13277"},"modified":"2021-10-07T06:51:28","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T06:51:28","slug":"greens-integrity-body-scores-top-marks-pms-model-weakest-in-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/10\/07\/greens-integrity-body-scores-top-marks-pms-model-weakest-in-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens\u2019 integrity body scores top marks; PM\u2019s model \u201cweakest in country&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Greens\u2019 model for a National Integrity Commission, which passed the Senate two years ago, has been given\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publicintegrity.org.au\/media-release-cic-would-be-australias-weakest-watchdog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top marks by The Centre for Public Integrity<\/a>, while the Morrison model was judged \u201cthe weakest in the country\u201d.<br \/>\n<strong>Greens deputy leader and spokesperson on democracy Senator Larissa Waters said:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThis PM\u2019s integrity body proposal has today been given an F for flaccid.<br \/>\n\u201cUnder his pathetic proposal many of the misconduct scandals involving current and former government MPs would slip through the net.<br \/>\n\u201cMorrison knows that half of the members of his Cabinet have serious integrity questions to answer, which could explain why his model is deliberately weak. It wouldn\u2019t be able to hold public hearings, initiate its own investigations, act retrospectively, make findings of fact or report publicly.<br \/>\n&#8220;It would also only investigate &#8216;serious&#8217; criminal corruption &#8211; such a high bar so as to render it inapplicable to much of the dodgy conduct we\u2019ve seen from federal politicians.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s long overdue, and it\u2019s so undercooked it looks like it\u2019s deliberately designed to fail.<br \/>\n\u201cBy contrast, the Greens\u2019 National Integrity Commission bill establishes an effective body that allows for public hearings, retrospectivity\u00a0and the ability to investigate anonymous tip-offs, balanced with appropriate safeguards and privacy provisions.<br \/>\n\u201cMorrison should listen to the Australian people and bring on the Greens\u2019 bill for debate in the House when parliament resumes. If he doesn\u2019t, the Greens will attempt to force the PM\u2019s hand by moving a concurrence motion.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Australian people know that corruption and misconduct are rife at the federal level.
