{"id":13172,"date":"2021-09-29T04:06:59","date_gmt":"2021-09-29T04:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=13172"},"modified":"2021-09-29T04:06:59","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T04:06:59","slug":"trees-to-cool-one-of-sydneys-hottest-suburbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/09\/29\/trees-to-cool-one-of-sydneys-hottest-suburbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Trees to cool one of Sydney&#039;s hottest suburbs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A trial project will see 2000 trees planted in one of Sydney\u2019s hottest suburbs, as part of an initiative informed by new research from the NSW Government.<br \/>\nThe south-west Sydney suburb of Rosemeadow has less than six per cent existing canopy cover and is significantly impacted by the urban heat island effect.<br \/>\nThe new research used to inform the trial has now been released to councils across NSW to help boost tree canopy cover and improve stormwater management.<br \/>\nMinister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the NSW Government and Campbelltown Council were working together to plant the trees in streets, schools, parks and open spaces in Rosemeadow.<br \/>\n\u201cTrees are our first line of defence against rising temperatures and the urban heat island effect, particularly in Western Sydney where temperatures in summer can soar to over 50 degrees,\u201d Mr Stokes said.<br \/>\n\u201cRosemeadow has some of the lowest tree cover in Greater Sydney and it\u2019s the perfect location to trial new ways to use canopy cover to combat rising temperatures.<br \/>\n\u201cThe research shows that we can also improve stormwater management by planting trees in stormwater basins, while also creating habitat for native animals and improving biodiversity.\u201d<br \/>\nTo encourage best practice in urban greening, the NSW Government is making three reports that detail the methodology of the Rosemeadow project available to councils to replicate for tree plantings on streets, reserves and in open spaces.<br \/>\nMember for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said Rosemeadow was selected as the demonstration site for the project due to its low tree canopy, substantial open space, and opportunities for planting near schools and on residual land.<br \/>\n\u201cOur aim is to create a greener, more pleasant Rosemeadow for the community to use, access and enjoy, while establishing a framework of best practice methodology that can be replicated by councils across the state\u201d, Mr Sidgreaves said.<br \/>\n\u201cMore high-quality open spaces across Greater Sydney provide the community with more opportunities to rediscover the joy of outdoor recreation, connect with nature, and improve wellbeing and active lifestyles.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Rosemeadow Demonstration Project supports the Premier\u2019s Priorities for more homes in urban areas within a 10 minute walk of quality green, open public space by 10 per cent, by 2023, and to plant one million trees in Greater Sydney by 2022.<br \/>\nFor more information and to view the reports visit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dpie.nsw.gov.au%2Frosemeadow&amp;data=04%7C01%7Cwebmaster%40nsw.liberal.org.au%7C08c73fee81394a053fe408d982caeaa1%7Cf7b9e888f8a7467190c0d6ca09a51633%7C0%7C0%7C637684631175464232%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=zK5iLSSj1THL2IOLs%2BDWsGJSwIdRU%2BSlLKFb5JX8VWo%3D&amp;reserved=0\">dpie.nsw.gov.au\/rosemeadow<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A trial project will see 2000 trees planted in one of Sydney\u2019s hottest suburbs, as part of an initiative informed by new research from the NSW Government.
