{"id":11993,"date":"2021-07-02T15:29:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-02T15:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=11993"},"modified":"2021-07-02T15:29:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-02T15:29:58","slug":"flood-improvements-coming-for-university-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/07\/02\/flood-improvements-coming-for-university-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Flood improvements coming for University Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">Work to reduce ongoing flooding near University Drive at Waratah West has received the go\u2013ahead following the awarding of a contract at Tuesday night\u2019s Council meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">Notorious for flooding after heavy rain, the low section of this busy road has seen vehicles including buses get stuck travelling along the University Drive crossing of Boatman Creek.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">The planned solution will better manage the flow of flooding water with removal of the existing culvert, excavation of creek embankments, and naturalisation of the channel north of University Drive, as well as construction of a new bridge on this stretch of the cycleway and shared path.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">City of Newcastle Lord Mayor\u00a0<\/span>Nuatali Nelmes said that the planned upgrade will make a significant difference in the lives of those living and working in the area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis project will mean less disruption to traffic on this important road connecting our community with the University and the nearby Mater Hospital by reducing flooding frequency,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">Deputy Lord Mayor said the work is part of our commitment to address flooding across the city,\u00a0<\/span>in particular in Wallsend where we have seen significant impacts over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cConstruction of the new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the new embankment will maintain this vital transport link between Newcastle City and the University,\u201d Cr Clausen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\">Construction planning will continue ahead of works starting in mid-2022 after the peak summer period.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Work to reduce ongoing flooding near University Drive at Waratah West has received the go\u2013ahead following the awarding of a contract at Tuesday night\u2019s Council meeting.
