{"id":11859,"date":"2021-06-22T02:22:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T02:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=11859"},"modified":"2021-06-22T02:22:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T02:22:14","slug":"local-government-a-priority-for-labor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/06\/22\/local-government-a-priority-for-labor\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Government A Priority For Labor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Albanese Labor Government would\u00a0welcome\u00a0local government\u00a0back to\u00a0Parliament by re-establishing the Australian Council of Local Government.<br \/>\nIn 2008, Labor Leader Anthony Albanese\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alp.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=942ebc4c1cf8fc522a4f4c50e&amp;id=b1b1fc102e&amp;e=a709c12679\">established<\/a>\u00a0the Australian Council of Local Government as then Local Government Minister to \u201cprovide a new nation building partnership between the Commonwealth and local government.\u201d<br \/>\nIt was an annual meeting with the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Mayors, Shire Presidents and local government stakeholders engaging directly on matters of significance to local and federal governments.<br \/>\nThe Liberals abolished the Council, ripping away an important function of the relationship between the two levels of government.<br \/>\nThe Prime Minister kicked local government to the kerb when he replaced COAG with the National Cabinet.<br \/>\nAs the closest level of government to our communities, local government served as an important part of the COAG process. The Liberals ignored the voices of our communities when they push local government to the kiddies table.<br \/>\nIn addition to re-establishing the Australian Council of Local Government,\u00a0Labor is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alp.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=942ebc4c1cf8fc522a4f4c50e&amp;id=34c8d2b42d&amp;e=a709c12679\">committed<\/a>\u00a0to putting local government on National Cabinet.<br \/>\nThroughout bushfires, floods and the COVID pandemic, council workers have been vital to providing services to help get us through.<br \/>\nThe Liberals will never make local government a priority.<br \/>\nOnly the Australian Labor Party will.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Albanese Labor Government would\u00a0welcome\u00a0local government\u00a0back to\u00a0Parliament by re-establishing the Australian Council of Local Government.
