{"id":11847,"date":"2021-06-22T02:12:15","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T02:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=11847"},"modified":"2021-06-22T02:12:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T02:12:15","slug":"8-5-million-in-support-for-migrants-and-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/06\/22\/8-5-million-in-support-for-migrants-and-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"$8.5 million in support for migrants and refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To mark Refugee Week, the NSW Government has announced $8.5 million over three years to continue important support programs for refugee, new and emerging communities as part of the 2021-2022 NSW Budget.<br \/>\nTreasurer Dominic Perrottet said the multi-year funding will ensure the continuation of key projects for newly arrived communities.<br \/>\n\u201cFunding in this space will ensure we can continue to support our refugees, newly arrived migrants and emerging communities with programs to help them settle and thrive,\u201d Mr Perrottet said.<br \/>\n\u201cPrograms such as these are central to the successful integration of newcomers. In particular, they are crucial in helping to reduce social isolation for families who don\u2019t have established networks or access to support.\u201d<br \/>\nThe funding will enable the continuation of programs to help newcomers find educational and employment opportunities, navigate and access support services and create community connections.<br \/>\nMinister for Multiculturalism Natalie Ward said the NSW Government works incredibly hard, through cross-sector collaboration with our broader community, to ensure newcomers feel welcome and supported.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are committed to bringing existing and emerging communities together, and seeing people from all backgrounds thrive,\u201d Mrs Ward said.<br \/>\n\u201cRefugee Week is also a chance to extend our gratitude to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers for their valuable contributions to our communities.\u201d<br \/>\nThe NSW Government is also committed to progressing opportunities for regional resettlement through an existing $3 million investment to deliver the\u00a0<em>NSW Growing Regions of Welcome (NSW GROW)<\/em>\u00a0Pilot Program, which has launched today.<br \/>\nNSW GROW aims to attract and retain newcomers, and to assist with relocation to regional NSW.<br \/>\n\u201cThis funding will improve NSW\u2019s capacity to promote social cohesion and encourage successful settlement across the state,\u201d Mrs Ward said.<br \/>\nThe NSW Coordinator General for Settlement, Professor Peter Shergold AC, said this significant investment will continue to achieve positive outcomes for NSW.<br \/>\n\u201cNSW GROW will address critical workforce needs in regional areas that would usually be filled through overseas migration,\u201d Professor Shergold said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis Program will support coordinated efforts across sectors to create secondary migration linkages between western Sydney and regional NSW and drive sustainable social and economic outcomes for participating regional communities and newcomers alike.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Australian Red Cross and Regional Development Australia will support delivery of NSW GROW in western Sydney, and the Murray and Riverina regions.<br \/>\nFor more information about Multicultural NSW, visit:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.multicultural.nsw.gov.au\/\">www.multicultural.nsw.gov.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To mark Refugee Week, the NSW Government has announced $8.5 million over three years to continue important support programs for refugee, new and emerging communities as part of the 2021-2022 NSW Budget.
