{"id":10368,"date":"2021-02-21T10:15:52","date_gmt":"2021-02-21T10:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=10368"},"modified":"2021-02-21T10:15:52","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T10:15:52","slug":"shortland-local-centre-upgrade-plans-out-for-feedback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/02\/21\/shortland-local-centre-upgrade-plans-out-for-feedback\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortland local centre upgrade plans out for feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"inner-head\">\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\n<div class=\"date-info\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pull-right right-icons\">\n<div class=\"share\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inner-desc\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"HeroImage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/Newcastle\/media\/Images\/News\/2%20Media%20Release%20images\/ShortlandLocalCentre_1_1_web.jpg?ext=.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>City of Newcastle is calling for community feedback on a proposal to improve safety for pedestrians and amenity of the local centre in Shortland.<br \/>\nCommunity consultation undertaken in April 2019 and June 2020 highlighted pedestrian safety at Sandgate Road as a high priority issue for residents and business owners in the local area.<br \/>\nIn response to this feedback the City is placing the Draft Shortland Local Centre Public Domain and Traffic Plan on public exhibition, seeking feedback on proposed changes including implementation of a 40km\/hr High Pedestrian Activity Area.<br \/>\nNewcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that safety for the community who shop and work in the Shortland Local Centre is a key priority.<br \/>\n\u201cThe plan on exhibition addresses community concerns and helps keep the community safe, as well as delivering improved public domain with upgraded footpaths and new street furniture,\u201d Cr Nelmes said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe want to create an inviting space for locals to do their shopping and support local small business.\u201d<br \/>\nWard Four Councillor Jason Dunn said the proposed changes are a critical step in improving the area for the benefit of Shortland locals.<br \/>\n\u201cFeedback on this next step is important, so we encourage the community to view the plan and share their views,\u201d Councillor Dunn said.<br \/>\nLong-term Shortland resident Wendy Heys also encourages the Shortland community to have their say.<br \/>\n\u201cI really welcome the upgrade to the shopping area making it safer for pedestrians, especially school children in the area.\u201d<br \/>\nAs well as a reduced speed limit, the plan includes construction of a pedestrian refuge and speed cushions to reduce driver speeds and create safer crossings for pedestrians.<br \/>\nThe City has also engaged a mural artist to work with the community to determine a theme for a new mural installation at the pharmacy on Hansen Place. The mural will be delivered in conjunction with construction of the safety and public domain upgrades, currently scheduled for mid 2021.<br \/>\nVisit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/yoursay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au\/yoursay<\/a>\u00a0to have your say on the proposed safety improvements.
