{"id":10299,"date":"2021-02-16T00:26:04","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T00:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=10299"},"modified":"2021-02-16T00:26:04","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T00:26:04","slug":"labor-backflip-would-only-benefit-the-rich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/02\/16\/labor-backflip-would-only-benefit-the-rich\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor backflip would only benefit the rich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian Greens Housing spokesperson Senator Mehreen Faruqi has said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/labor-to-dump-bill-shorten-s-negative-gearing-and-capital-gains-policies-20210211-p571qw.html\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that Labor may scrap commitments to wind back negative gearing and reduce capital gains tax (CGT) deductions would only benefit the wealthy.<br \/>\nSenator Faruqi said:<br \/>\n\u201cFor decades, Australian governments have created a housing system that actively impoverishes people and makes inequality worse.<br \/>\n\u201cNot too long ago, Labor was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electionwatch.unimelb.edu.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0004\/1952023\/Negative-Gearing.pdf\">calling out<\/a>\u00a0negative gearing and the CGT discount as \u201ctax subsidies\u201d that \u201cbenefit the wealthiest Australians\u201d and are \u201cskewed to high income earners\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cThis seems to be an opposition in name only. There is no good policy reason for backing down on negative gearing and capital gains. Any back down would be purely political and would only benefit the rich. It will do nothing to provide a home for everyone.<br \/>\n\u201cCovid-19 has put the inequity and inhumanity of our housing system starkly in the spotlight. Labor should be strengthening its policies on negative gearing and capital gains, not abolishing them.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m urging Labor not to shrink away from what are very modest policies.
