{"id":10114,"date":"2021-02-02T01:26:48","date_gmt":"2021-02-02T01:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/?p=10114"},"modified":"2021-02-02T01:26:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-02T01:26:48","slug":"1990-cabinet-papers-reveal-greiner-governments-wide-ranging-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.16news.com.au\/index.php\/2021\/02\/02\/1990-cabinet-papers-reveal-greiner-governments-wide-ranging-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"1990 CABINET PAPERS REVEAL GREINER GOVERNMENT\u2019S WIDE-RANGING REFORMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW Cabinet Papers of 1990 have today been published online by NSW State Archives giving the public an insight into the detailed workings of the Greiner Government in its third year in power.<br \/>\nIn the same year as Nelson Mandela\u2019s release from prison and Dame Joan Sutherland\u2019s final performance at the Sydney Opera House, the NSW Government showed no signs of slowing down on delivering wide-ranging reforms for a more efficient government.<br \/>\nMinister for the Arts, Don Harwin said, \u201cthe 1990 Cabinet Papers reveal the Liberal-National Party Coalition Government\u2019s determination to deliver a more effective and transformative management of the public sector and the economy.<br \/>\n\u201cThe then Premier\u2019s focus on a more accountable Cabinet and public service remains the basis of good Government practice today and these archived papers bear witness to all that was achieved in that year.\u201d<br \/>\nState Archives\u2019 Executive Director, Adam Lindsay said that the Cabinet Papers again this year, reveal how the issues of 30 years ago resonate with us today. \u201cAt a time when we are now encouraging people to work longer, the Cabinet Papers reveal that this is nothing new and that the ground was laid for such initiatives three decades ago,\u201d Mr Lindsay said.<br \/>\nSignificant Cabinet decisions made in 1990 included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Education<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0introduction of the Education Reform Act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Industrial Relations<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 reforms to reflect a market-oriented approach to industrial relations<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parliamentary and Electoral Reform<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a return of the size of the Legislative Assembly to 99 and the<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 subsequent redistribution of electoral boundaries<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Environment and Planning<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>establishment of a new Coastal Protection Policy,<\/li>\n<li>establishment of the Environment Protection Authority<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Social issues:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>approval of access to adoption information for adult adopted persons<\/li>\n<li>and the abolition of compulsory retirement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.records.nsw.gov.au\/archives\/collections-and-research\/guides-and-indexes\/cabinet-papers-release\">here<\/a>\u00a0to access the digitised 1990 Cabinet Papers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The NSW Cabinet Papers of 1990 have today been published online by NSW State Archives giving the public an insight into the detailed workings of the Greiner Government in its third year in power.
