Following the recent earthquake in Vanuatu, the Australian Government will provide further assistance to support the restoration of essential services and infrastructure.

The $10 million package will focus on the education, health and transport sectors, addressing critical Vanuatu Government priorities. It will be delivered through local systems and partners to ensure local ownership and long-term sustainability.

Australia’s assistance will also help strengthen Vanuatu’s resilience against future disasters and support vulnerable groups including women, children and people with disability.

It builds on Australia’s initial $7 million package of practical humanitarian assistance for Vanuatu’s initial earthquake response, which included emergency supplies, funding to humanitarian partners, and the deployment of Australia Assists personnel, Australian Medical Assistance Teams and a Disaster Assistance Response Team.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake, which took place on 17 December 2024, claimed 14 lives and impacted an estimated 80,000 people.

The Greens have renewed calls for a cap and freeze on rents as new independent analysis reveals that unlimited rent increases over recent years have eroded renters ability to save for a house deposit.

The independent analysis conducted by the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) looks at housing deposit affordability for an average renter, consistent with methodology used by the Reserve Bank of Australia, and finds that a cap and freeze on rents would drastically reduce the time it takes a renter to save for a deposit.

The PBO analysis outlines that if rents continue to climb at the rate they have in 2022-2023, it will take the average renter 65.6 years to save for a house deposit by 2030.

The PBO canvased different rent control policies and found that that time would drop drastically if a rent cap and freeze were introduced.

Rents have skyrocketed in the last two years, and while the increases have slowed in the last quarter, the annual increase is still more than twice what it was before the pandemic.

Even if rent increases slowed to their 10 year average, the analysis finds that renters who can only afford to save 10% of their income would still find themselves saving for 15 years.

Rental affordability is at a 20 year low, and renters need the government to step in now. Sixteen countries across Europe have some form of rent control, while the ACT has enjoyed it since 2019.

The Greens will centre rent reform as part of their policy platform in the lead up to the Prahran by-election as rents have skyrocketed in Prahran and 55% of the population are renters.

“It’s almost impossible to save if you’re renting right now – you’re probably struggling to pay for groceries let alone a house deposit. This study makes the assumption that renters can currently save, but without rent controls, the possibility of that ever materialising into a home of their own becomes a distant dream.”

“We only need to look back over recent years to know that as long as landlords are able to jack up the rent as much as they like – they will.”

“Right now, renters know that it’s basically impossible to save for a house deposit and this is proof that with a rent cap and freeze, we can change that.”

Construction is now underway on the highly anticipated Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Perth’s north, delivering key infrastructure for local communities to enjoy now and into the future.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined Federal Member for Pearce Tracey Roberts and Mayor of Wanneroo Linda Aitken to officially turn the sod to mark the start of works today.

Alkimos has been identified as a key area of development in the Northern Coastal Growth Corridor of the City of Wanneroo, with the expected growth identifying the need for significant community infrastructure that will meet current and future demand.

Building Australia’s Future is about so much more than bricks and mortar. It is about creating a better life for Australians. Projects like this create communities.

The project involves the construction of a regional level aquatic and multi-purpose facility, and will include:

• three indoor pools, including a learn to swim and free form leisure pool
• health suite including spa, sauna and steam room
• outdoor 50 metre competition pool
• multi-use indoor sports courts with spectator seating
• gymnasium and fitness suite
• cafeteria
• occasional childcare space
• community facilities, including meeting and consulting rooms.

The facility will provide a key space for the community to meet, socialise and participate in recreation activities including volunteering, building a foundation for social cohesion.

It is expected that the project will support 250 jobs during construction and will create another 42 ongoing jobs once complete.

The nearly $88 million project has been made possible with a commitment of $30 million from the Albanese Government, $12.6 million from the Cook Government and $45.3 million from the City of Wanneroo.

With the Prime Minister kicking off the unofficial campaign for the 2025 Federal Election this week, the Greens are calling for the ABC to be declared the official host of the leaders’ debate and for the Greens’ leader to be included in the leaders’ debates.

Greens acting leader and spokesperson for communications Senator Sarah Hanson-Young urged the Prime Minister to name the ABC as the official leaders’ debate host and commit to legislating the policy to ‘Dutton-proof’ it.

“When parliament returns in February, the Greens will move for the ABC to be designated as the official host of the Federal Election leaders’ debate,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

“This is a simple and common-sense proposition; our national broadcaster should be the home of our national election debates.

“When it comes to our democracy and a fair and balanced leaders’ debate, we can’t leave it to the Murdoch Media.

“Voters deserve to be able to watch the debate for free on TV and online and for it to be moderated by the most trusted media outlet in the country.

“Unlike the commercial networks, the ABC is governed by a charter that demands that it act independently and with the best interests of the Australian people in mind.

“Election debates should be about providing information to Australian voters, not about securing ratings for billionaire media moguls.

“At the last election, we saw a sitting prime minister refuse to appear in a debate on the national broadcaster and instead participate in debates that were behind paywalls or on commercial networks.

“Australians pride ourselves on our free and fair elections. As we see the erosion of democratic institutions around the world, making the ABC our national election host broadcaster is an important step in preventing the wider spread of misinformation.

The Albanese Labor Government is boosting Queensland’s housing supply by investing $101.8 million in critical infrastructure that will unlock more than 4,800 more homes across the state.

Ten projects will be allocated funding through the Albanese Government’s Housing Support Program, to fast-track housing in regional and metropolitan growth areas.

Funding will be used on enabling infrastructure works such as roads, sewage and water, as well as supporting access to social housing and increasing housing supply.

• $6.6 million to facilitate two new residential expansion areas in the north and south of Pormpuraaw
• $1.7 million to help turn 14 lots into 34 lots in Napranum
• $9.9 million to deliver 32 fully serviced lots in the remote indigenous community of Seisia
• $5.1 million to support a 20-lot social housing development in Bamaga
• $1.8 million to improve access and provide essential trunk infrastructure to the social housing development in New Mapoon
• $1.8 million to deliver two lots on Mornington Island
• $35.5 million to provide road access, footpaths and storm water drains for the Kinross Road Estate
• $18.8 million for water and sewerage works in Balamba
• $10.3 million for trunk infrastructure at Eaton Estate
• $10.1 million to upgrade the road and provide public transport infrastructure in Narangba

This funding follows $7 million already allocated to Queensland to fast-track planning capability and $67.4 million for significant enabling infrastructure and social housing across the state.

It’s part of the Albanese Government’s $32 billion Homes for Australia Plan to meet the ambitious national target of building 1.2 million new, well-located homes over the next five years.

The Albanese Labor Government is building Australia’s future, today providing First Port of Entry to three critical ports in Western Australia’s north, along with a major package to boost housing and build community infrastructure in the state’s regions.

Applications for expanded border services at Wyndham, Ashburton and Dampier have been given the green light by the Albanese Government, allowing goods subject to biosecurity and other controls to land here and enter Australia.

This will allow for more direct international shipping, meaning businesses and industries in the north will be able to import and export goods closer to their operations, without having to transit through ports further way.

This will benefit businesses and communities particularly in the East Kimberley and Pilbara regions, cutting costs, boosting productivity, providing jobs, and improving the resilience of WA supply chains, including for clean energy and green fuel projects.

Today, the Albanese Government is also announcing over $200 million to boost housing and deliver community infrastructure in Western Australia’s regions.

We’re unlocking 1367 new homes across the state, with almost $90 million for projects that will deliver critical infrastructure such as water, power and roads, such as:

• $32.8 million for the Wheatbelt Regional Housing Initiative to unlock over 400 homes across 10 shires in the Wheatbelt region
• $22.1 million to unlock 591 new homes in Karratha
• $14.2 million to unlock 86 new homes in a new development in Lockyer.

Homes are not complete without the infrastructure that creates a community. The Albanese Government is also funding projects – such as cultural and sporting hubs, town precincts and parks – to improve the lives of locals in the regions.

This includes $22.8 million from the regional Precincts and Partnerships program as well as over $89 million from the Growing Regions program, with projects such as:

• $1.9 million for concept planning and an implementation strategy for the Kununurra Nganjileg lambagem ‘Riverbank Recreation’ waterfront precinct
• $15 million to construct the Newman Youth and Community Hub, including a barbeque area, sports court, cycling track, sporting complex and childcare facilities.
• $13.2 million for the Wyndham Community Boat Launching Facility providing a floating access pontoon system, new carparking, footpaths and landscaping to increase local tourism and fishing business activity.
• $7.8 million for the Martu Arts Centres Improvement Project delivering three new arts centres to provide places of learning and culture for communities.
• $15.5 million to support the construction and revitalisation of the Carnarvon CBD.
• $19.6 million for the Wyndham Multi-Purpose Community Hub in East Kimberley, which will provide sporting, educational, training and arts facilities, as well as an evacuation shelter.

These projects demonstrate the Government’s commitment to listening to local voices and funding priorities that benefit Western Australia’s regions.

The Albanese Labor Government is building Australia’s future today, announcing $50 million to boost housing and deliver community infrastructure projects in Cairns and Far North Queensland.

Almost $25 million has been allocated through the Housing Support Program package to boost social housing supply across the region.  

This funding will support the delivery of increased social housing supply through the construction of enabling infrastructure and community amenities such as roads, stormwater drainage, earthworks and connection to utilities.

Five housing projects have been allocated funding across the Far North Queensland region:   

• $6.5 million to facilitate two new residential expansion areas in the north and south of Pormpuraaw.
• $1.6 million to help turn 14 lots into 34 lots in Napranum.
• $9.9 million to deliver 32 fully serviced lots in the remote indigenous community of Seisia.
• $5.1 million to support a 20-lot social housing development in Bamaga.
• $1.8 million to improve access and provide essential trunk infrastructure to the social housing development in New Mapoon.

Seven projects will share in almost $25 million of Growing Regions Program, which provides funding of between $500,000 and $15 million to local government entities and incorporated not-for-profit organisations for community infrastructure projects.

The seven successful projects, which went through a competitive, merit-based assessment process:

• $4 million for the Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre.
• $2 million to upgrade the PCYC Cairns facilities.
• $5 million to upgrade the Redlynch Community Sporting Precinct.
• $2.65 million for Stage 2 of the Cultural Knowledge Centre in Dixie for the Olkola People.
• $1.96 million for streetscape beautification and shared cycle and pedestrian paths in Mapoon.
• $7.49 million for a new council administration and community hub for Wujal Wujal.
• $1.84 million for a Digital Services Centre in Hope Vale.

The Greens have announced a new policy to shift to 50 cent fares for all public transport across Victoria as part of their plan for Prahran, to tackle cost of living ahead of the upcoming by-election.

Under the Greens plan, there would be an initial six month trial of 50 cent fares in Victoria, where all transport across metropolitan Melbourne and regional towns across the state will be only 50 cents as a combined cost of living and climate change measure.

50 cent fares will provide immediate cost-of-living relief by saving people $50 a week, as well as cutting climate pollution.

The estimated cost of the six month trial is $339 million, which the Greens propose can be funded by an increase to the existing online gambling levy and the introduction of a bank levy. A reduction in fare evasion and increased patronage will also reduce the cost of the policy.

The Greens say the policy is needed because people are struggling with the cost of living, and public transport fares are too expensive. The cost of this trial would be comparable to the Government’s school saving bonus – demonstrating it is realistic and affordable.

Last year the Queensland government successfully implemented 50 cent fares after a strong campaign from the Greens. After running a hugely popular trial, the change has now become permanent with tripartisan support, and has saved Queenslanders more than $110 million.

Current patronage on Victorian public transport has still not returned to pre-COVID levels and the Greens say the success of 50c fares in Queensland shows why it’s needed in Victoria.

The Greens will also be pushing for an acceleration of the integration of iPhone use to tap on and off and increased investment in public transport for more frequent services.

Queenslanders deserve a long term plan for essential infrastructure, and the Albanese Government is delivering that certainty as we build Australia’s future.

The Albanese Government will provide an additional $7.2 billion to upgrade and fix the Bruce Highway in Queensland, to bring it up to a minimum three-star safety rating.

This historic funding is the single largest investment ever into the Bruce Highway, and brings the Australian Government’s total outlay for the 1,673 km road to more than $17 billion.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has estimated $9 billion will achieve a minimum of three out of five-star safety rating for the entirety of the Bruce.

In recognition of the Bruce Highway’s national importance, unique challenges and dire safety record, we are committing to funding 80 per cent of that $9 billion.

Key stakeholders, including RACQ, Queensland Farmers Federation (QFF), Queensland Trucking Association (QTA), and Queensland Tourism Industry Council along with everyday Queenslanders have called for more investment and a long-term plan to fix the Bruce.

While Peter Dutton is yet to commit a dollar to the iconic Highway, the Albanese Government has prioritised fixing this key transport corridor since coming to office.

The Bruce Highway has an average Fatal and Serious Injury (FSI) crash rate three to five times higher than any major highway in New South Wales and Victoria.

As the major north-south corridor which connects Brisbane to the regional centres of Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, the Bruce is critical to the movement of passengers, freight and tourists across the state – supporting around 62 per cent of the population in Queensland.

The new safety package will fast-track critical projects along the whole corridor, and will initially focus on priority sections north of Gympie that have been identified by stakeholders due to their higher than average crash rates.

Priority sections include Maryborough to Benaraby, Rockhampton to St Lawrence, Bowen to Townsville and Ingham to Innisfail.

Projects within the package may include installing safety barriers, wide centre lines and audio tactile line marking; constructing wider shoulders; increasing run off areas, overtaking lanes and rest areas; and improving intersections, signage, and sight lines.

There will also be a focus on resealing and rehabilitating road surfaces for resilience to “Build Back Better”, thereby mitigating damage from increasing weather events. 

The identification and prioritisation of projects funded under the package will be informed in consultation with the Queensland Government and the Bruce Highway Advisory Council, with works commencing in 2025.

Twenty years ago, in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, Australia, India, Japan, and the United States came together in service to the people of our region for the first time as the grouping now known as the Quad.  The tsunami was one of the worst disasters in history, claiming the lives of nearly a quarter million people and displacing 1.7 million across 14 countries.  Together our four countries contributed over 40,000 emergency responders, working with other partners across the Indo-Pacific region to support millions of people affected by the catastrophe.  We honor the memories of those no longer with us and recognize the survivors and the families of those who were lost.

Our foundational commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief remains strong.  We continue to work side-by-side to prepare for and respond quickly and effectively to disasters across the region.  In 2024, our four countries collectively supported disaster preparedness and life-saving relief efforts across the Indo-Pacific, and we continue to build on those efforts to identify new ways to respond rapidly to humanitarian crises and disasters.

What began as an emergency response to a catastrophe has grown into a full-fledged partnership delivering positive outcomes for the people of our region.  Quad countries now work together and with partners across the Indo-Pacific to address complex challenges, from fighting climate change, cancer, and pandemics, to bolstering quality infrastructure, maritime domain awareness, STEM education, counter-terrorism efforts, critical and emerging technologies, and cyber security.  Since 2021, the Leaders of our four nations have met annually to drive the Quad’s positive contributions across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

As four partners, we share a vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific that is peaceful, stable, and prosperous, underpinned by effective regional institutions.  We reaffirm our unwavering support for ASEAN’s centrality and unity as well as mainstreaming and implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.  We respect Pacific-led regional architecture, foremost the Pacific Islands Forum.  We are also steadfast in our support for the Indian Ocean Rim Association, the region’s premier organization.
